Greek Chicken Gyro Recipe
No need to go to a greek festival or restaurant for chicken gyros. You can make your own homemade chicken gyro. All you need is marinated chicken (which you can grill, pan fry, or roast), homemade tzatziki sauce (recipe available in search bar), and any topping you wish. Toppings usually include lettuce, tomato, red onion, and feta cheese. You will also need pita bread. If you don’t have the time, store bought pita bread will work in a pinch. But trust me homemade pitas are the best. Try my pita recipe they are easier to make than you might think. Plus you can freeze any remaining pita.
Making the chicken for Greek gyro is easy. Just marinade your chicken in lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, ground mustard, dried oregano, and salt or garlic salt. Exact quantities are below. You can use a container or zip lock bag just mix the marinade ingredients together, and place the chicken in the marinade making sure to coat the chicken well. After marinating for one hour in the refrigerator discard the marinating liquid.
You can grill or roast the chicken in the oven till cooked. If oven roasting preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. Roast for twenty minutes or until the chicken registers at least 161 degrees F with a meat thermometer. A nice dark char from grilling or roasting improves the flavor. As an alternative you can also pan fry the chicken in a little oil till browned about 7 minutes per side. Make sure the check the temperature to insure the chicken is thoroughly cooked.
To assemble the Greek chicken gyro place the chicken on a pita and add as much or as little tzatziki sauce as you wish and your choice of toppings, I recommend lettuce and tomato. Fold in half and enjoy!
